The climate crisis is the greatest challenge facing humanity.

The science couldn’t be clearer: we are facing a climate change crisis that threatens the future of life on our planet. An increase in average global temperatures above 1.5C risks sea level rise, extreme weather and the loss of species and habitats as well as food scarcity and increasing poverty for millions of people worldwide.

The 2015 Paris Agreement was a landmark global response to combat climate change. But many countries and companies still aren’t doing enough. That’s where ClientEarth comes in. We have the power to fix it. By using the power of the law we bring about seismic, systemic change that protects life on Earth.

Climate crisis facts

Governments and corporations around the world have failed to take the facts about the climate crisis seriously, leaving millions of people vulnerable as a result of climate change.

The climate crisis is causing widespread harm to people and the planet:

20m

people a year are forced from their homes because of climate change.

90%

90% of the world’s coral reefs are at risk from warming oceans

259bn

tonnes of ice were lost from Greenland every year between 1993 and 2016

20cm

increase in global sea levels in the last century

The fact is that none of us can afford to ignore the climate crisis.

The economy and the climate crisis

Taking climate action will be beneficial to economic growth in the long-term. There are many economic and industrial opportunities from investing in the infrastructure and technology needed for a net-zero society. While President Trump withdrew the US from the Paris Agreement in 2025, many states and US businesses are still committed to lowering their emissions. Zero- and low-carbon goods and services already represent one of the fastest-growing parts of the US economy. What’s more, taking action on climate change would reduce the frequency and intensity of extreme weather events like flooding and heatwaves that can have a huge economic cost. Between 1980 and 2011 floods affected more than 5.5 million people globally and caused direct economic losses of almost $100 billion.

Nature and the climate crisis

We can’t solve the biodiversity crisis without also solving the climate crisis. Right now, one million plant and animal species are at risk of extinction, many due to our rapidly changing climate. The rate at which our planet’s climate is changing means many species are unable to adapt quickly enough.

Human health and the climate crisis

Climate change is expected to be the biggest human health threat of the 21st century. An increase in the frequency of heatwaves will leave more people exposed to extreme heat. Infectious diseases are also likely to spread more easily. Higher temperatures create perfect conditions for reproduction of diseases whilst changing climates mean the insects which carry diseases can survive in more regions of the world. Changing weather patterns will also affect crop production – particularly wheat and rice production - and the availability of fresh water. This will likely cause undernutrition and other related health problems for the world’s poorest communities.

The facts about the climate crisis are startling. That’s why we’re using the law to hold corporations accountable for fueling climate change, and to drive positive action.
